There are four primary brain wave states, including alpha, beta, delta, and theta. Beta is complete awareness, delta is sleep, theta is partial awareness that allows for creativity and learning, and alpha is deep absorption of information in a more or less non-conscious state. When one meditates, they reach an alpha state; extremely aware of surroundings, yet so entranced with their internal condition that the outside world won’t phase them. The alpha state is synonymous with extremely effective meditation.
