This is the Chaturanga Dandasana that I can only do today. It’s not perfect but It’s the one that I have been able to achieve so far. I used to land; or better said, crashed my face on the floor (I have witnesses on this matter 😃) but with a lot of practice and mainly training my abs and lifting weights to gain more traction, I ve come up to this point. I feel comfortable here, this is where I m not struggling, this where I find balance, this is where I can breathe while I m doing it, this is where the inhale allows me to exhale in peace. So unless you are hurting yourself or doing it completely wrong, sometimes not achieving it completely means that your body, mind or heart have limitations and that honoring them is your truth. For the time being I found content and peace here, in my own Chaturanga Dandasana that I can do. I can breathe. Você acredita que você co cria toda a sua realidade? Eu acredito. Eu não ficava doente há mais de 10 anos e no último mês fiquei duas vezes. Ok, duas vezes virose que a Lily trouxe da escola. Mas ano passado ela também ficou doente algumas vezes, meu marido pegava e eu não. Acredito realmente que quando estamos com nosso campo energético alto nossa imunidade aumenta. Quando estamos com o campo baixo, nos sentindo cansados, isso gera uma fadiga física e a imunidade baixa. Eu estava me sentindo super cansada nos últimos meses e desejando 1 semana de férias. Mas eu acho que não manifestei direito 😂 Eu quero 1 semana de férias na praia, cheia de saúde, pra brincar com as crianças, entrar no mar, correr, ler um livro, enfim com saúde e as crianças também! O descanso forçado veio em forma de uma gripe super forte. Cancelei varias aulas, fiquei em casa, dormi bastante, mas sem estar com disposição, com a garganta doendo, sem voz. Mas ok, brinquei bastante com a Lily, dei bastante colo pro Louis que só está conseguindo dormir em pezinho pq não consegue respirar direito com o narizinho congestionado. Valeram esses dias em casa. Se a gente prorroga demais o descanso vem assim esses descansos obrigatórios. As we look further into the complex universe of the shoulder joint and the role it plays in our Yoga practice, a posture whose eminence and frequency demands a clear overview is Chaturanga Dandasana (Low Plank). The amount of times I have had students give me notice that they can no longer perform this pose because of the strain they feel in their shoulder/s, exceeds my capacity to recount. Like many other teachers, the technique that I initially learned to perform this pose with was very cursory and missed the anatomical integrity that it so badly deserves. The most common and omissions I see over and over again are: 1. Alignment of shoulders with respect to the hands 2. The angle of the humerus (upper arm) with respect to the torso 3. The grip/contact of the hands on the mat 4. Position of the head The all too pervasive instruction in this pose is to move the shoulders forward of the hands and maintain a vertical line of the forearms (pic 1). The danger with this technique is that it places an unnecessary amount of stress on the anterior shoulder joint capsule (pic 2). The shoulders’ inherently shallow socket and lack of stability, requires us to recruit as much muscular force as possible in containing its proper alignment. When the shoulders are placed beyond the hands, the muscular demand on sustaining stability is so great that students often rely on their joint capsule to bear the weight of the body. The joint capsule is not meant for this. Moreover, the natural design of the shoulder joint possesses the least amount of support on the anterior side, where the brunt of the damage to the capsule often occurs. The safer and more functional alignment of Chaturanga (pic3) closely mimics that of the traditional and time-tested push-up, where the placement of the shoulders relative to the hands is more vertical. The most common issues with Chaturangas are due to lack of strength to perform the pose fully and correctly. Maintaining a modified version but engaging in the proper form is the bestway to build the strength required to create integrity in the pose. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Common issues: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ● Hips high or low, not in the straight line with the body ● Shoulders dipped through the center line ● Head dropped ● Uneven lowering of the pelvis and chest ● “Collapsing” to the ground ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “Chaturanga Dandasana: “Four-Limbed Staff Pose.” The Sanskrit of this pose refers to the 4-limbs, the 4 points of bodily extremities rooted to the earth, and the “staff” or the “rod” of the body, in this case, the spine. Chaturanga is an action pose. Starting in high plank, activate the entire body from toes to crown. Before even going anywhere draw inward toward the spine, using the muscles to strengthen and gird the spinal column. Press your hands and toes into the ground, lengthen through the arms rounding slightly at the shoulders. Allow your abs and the sides of your waist to pull inward and upwards toward the spine. Tuck the pelvis up and in, lower hips in line. Round slightly across the shoulder girdle. Take your gaze forward, and hold yourself steady. Once set, tip forward on your toes, draw your elbows in toward your body, and lower yourself to a hover a few inches from the ground being sure to keep the straight line you’ve constructed with your body. Although Chaturagna Dandasana is repeated many times in a yoga class, it is very challenging. Every time you meet the pose, come to it with the resolve to set it up better and more fully than the previous time. If at any time the pose becomes compromised, revert to a modified version to maintain the structure and integrity and strength and length in the spinal column. I guess it depends on the speed of your flow. I personally am a believer in quality over quantity. I'm also a believer in advancing step-by-step with the very specific needs of the individual in-mind.⁣ ⁣ For years I have watched people come to my classes, dumping into their shoulders in chaturanga, harshing their wrists and necks in up-dog, and flipping their feet one at a time during transitions, thus creating a great potential for pelvic imbalance. It just doesn't need to be like that.⁣ ⁣ Clip #1 - Knees down, lower to floor, cobra instead of up-dog. Great for lower back and shoulder injuries and those somewhat new to Vinyasa.⁣ ⁣ Clip #2 - Lower to floor in one solid piece, up-dog, knees keep transition to down-dog stable and light through the pelvis. Great for anyone, anytime.⁣ ⁣ Clip # 3 - Chaturanga to knees, knees acting as extra point of stability AND place-holder to keep shoulders over wrists. Perfect for those about to transition to direct transition from chaturanga to up-dog, but may need a bit of extra of shoulder-core support.⁣ ⁣ Clip # 4 - Culmination of working patiently through 1 - 3; SECRET TOE MOVE takes you seamlessly from chaturanga to up-dog while maintaining shoulders over wrists, in all transitions, feet flip at the same time preventing pelvic imbalance, and encouraging lightess. ⁣ Where should you be working? ~dont be afraid to take a step back, all is coming~ . Lately I've taken the bold decision to start working and teaching correct Chaturanga/ Vinyasa / Surya Namaskar at the beginning of class. (ONE vinyasa move only as a focus, so as not to overload, I mean how much is going on in 'Catvari step/ jump back- Chaturanga' !?!!!! ) . You know how many times I've rushed across to someone in Cobra pose with straight arms and on cueing a bent elbow their eyes light up, and they grin or say oooooooooooh mmmmm 😍! Often a moment of knowledge can change a practise forever! Thing is I can't reach you all in the rapidness of the Sun Salutations so I'm happily slowing them down to make them more juicy and fruitful! . As teachers we worry about disturbing the flow, of giving our students something they don't like! Will they hate us?! It has to be done as this is something they do repeatedly, and done wrong can bring pain. I am pleased to say the feedback is all good! (Thank you for the lovely reviews ☺️) I'm equipping them with the skills and knowledge so they can then individually keep applying and practising ... Explaining the 'MOVE' mechanically and energetically, and anatomically, the 'WHY'. If you're unsure where you're at, film yourself!!! . Sun Salutations are a great way to “get into yoga”. Whereas many find them easy, when you are just starting out, it’s normal to struggle with forward folds, chaturanga dandasana, upward facing dog, downward facing dog. And then there’s the jump that Ashtangis do that is as exhilarating as it is intimidating for beginners. Here, I’ve included a few modifications (numbers according to the photos): 3. Forward Fold - knees bent slightly 4. Lift - coming up on to the fingertips, instead of palms flat on the ground and in line with the feet 6. Chaturanga- modified by doing “knees-chest-chin”. It is better to modify chaturanga until you can do it properly. That way, you avoid injury. 7. Upward Facing Dog - modified by doing cobra 8. Downward Facing Dog - modified with knees bent and heels not forced to the ground 8. Jump/Floating Forward - opting to step/walk forward instead Disclaimer - my own practice is mostly Ashtanga based and therefore my alignment is based on Ashtanga. You will notice that in photo 2, my palms are together, gaze towards the thumb, tailbone is tucked under. There is no back bend. CHATURANGA DANDASANA Chatur significa cuatro. Anga, miembros o apoyos. Danda quiere decir palo o bastón y asana postura. Entonces, Chaturanga Dandasana es la postura del Bastón de 4 apoyos. Esta es LA asana de preparación para todas las que involucren fuerza y balance de brazos. Tiene múltiples beneficios: fortalece principalmente brazos, munecas y piernas, pero también el resto del cuerpo; es suuuper importante mantener el abdomen (Core) bien activo! Como hacerla? Desde postura de tabla, activar el cuerpo, mantener cuello alargado, contraer abdomen. Desde los dedos de los pies, el cuerpo debe proyectarse hacia adelante. Mantener los codos pegados al cuerpo durante todo el movimiento de descenso. Ahora si, al exhala baja el cuerpo en forma recta (como una tabla!), sin ningún tipo de flexión en el torso mas allá de los brazos. Los antebrazos deben permanecer en angulo recto con el suelo y los brazos en paralelo. Puede ser muy difícil al comienzo, así que te sugiero empezar probando con rodillas apoyadas. Te va a servir para poder focalizarte en la técnica. Sometimes we have to break down a posture in order to find what feels right for our bodies. 🙏🏻☀️ * When I teach yoga postures to my students I very often teach parts of the posture so that students can experience different aspects and ways of working with their bodies. We all have unique, individual bodies that bend and move in a way that is different to other bodies. If we teach with the attitude ‘fit your body into the pose’ we are not honouring our individual uniqueness. So, we should teach ‘fit the pose around your body’ so that we find a pose that suits our individual body. Pose des Sonnengrußes vor, Chaturanga Dandasana, für die es verschiedene Übersetzungsmöglichkeiten gibt wie z.B. “Bretthaltung”, “Stockhaltung” oder “viergliedrige Stabstellung”. 🦎🌞⠀ 😊Egal, wie du sie nennst, diese Übung stärkt und strafft die Handgelenke, Arme, Bauchmuskeln und den unteren Rücken. Ähnlich wie bei einem herkömmlichen Push-Up werden auch die Muskeln, welche die Wirbelsäule umgeben, gestärkt, was zu einer besseren Körperhaltung beiträgt. ⠀ ⠀ 🚫Bitte nicht ausüben bei:⠀ ❌einem Karpaltunnelsyndrom, ⠀ ❌Schulter-, Ellenbogen- oder Handgelenksverletzungen⠀ ❌Schwangerschaft ⠀ ⠀ 👟Schritte: ⠀ ✔Beginne auf allen Vieren kniend. Halte die Ellbogen direkt über die Handgelenke und senke den Körper langsam ab, um ein paar Zentimeter über dem Boden zu schweben. Halte deinen Rücken flach.⠀ ✔Aktiviere die Bauch- und Beinmuskulatur und heb die Brust an. ⠀ ✔Beug die Ellbogen um 90 Grad, sodass Schultern und Ellbogen eine Linie bilden und die Ellbogenspitzen Richtung Füße deuten. Leg die Ellbogen dabei an, nicht zu den Seiten abspreizen!⠀ ✔Halten! Press die Handknöchel in den Boden und senk die Brust nicht ab. Lass auch die Schultern nicht tiefer sinken als die Ellbogen. ⠀ ⠀ 💡Tipp:Falls die volle Brettpose zu herausfordernd ist, führe nur die halbe Brettpose aus. Komm zuerst auf die Knie. Chaturanga Dandasana also known as Low Plank or Four-Limbed Staff Pose is one of yoga’s most challenging pose but it is often introduced to yoga beginners with minimal instruction and no real discussion of the dos and donts that can help prevent shoulder injury. . You’ll find Chaturanga incorporated into Sun Salutation series and many vinyasa flows. It is important to do this pose properly. Chaturanga is also the first step in more advanced arm balance poses. . Don’t : 1. Sag your thighs or belly on the ground. 2. Keep the tops of your feet on the floor. 3. Let your shoulders drop below your elbow. 4. Let your elbows drop behind your wrists. 5. Let your elbow splay out to the sides. 6. Hunch your shoulders up by your ears. 7. Force it if you are not ready. . Do : 1. Keeps your legs active. 2. Press your heels back. 3. Engage your core. 4. Pull your shoulders down your back. 5. Pull your sternum forward. 6.
